What Is Career Counseling? How to Know When You Need It

Gain an understanding of how career counseling can benefit your career and take steps to decide if career counseling is right for you.

Career counseling is a service that helps people begin, change, or advance their careers. It can include one-on-one conversations between a counselor and a career seeker, as well as assessments, activities, and projects designed to help career seekers make the most of their strengths. A career counselor is similar to a career coach in that professionals in both roles can help you navigate your career path and understand your career goals. Although these terms are often used interchangeably, professionals may identify themselves as one or the other and describe their services in very specific ways. You may find that career counselors are trained and certified for counseling, or human development.  Another difference you may come across is in the nature of the career support, with counselors helping you with career exploration.

What to expect from career counseling?

Whether you are a student or recent grad or at the midpoint of your career trajectory and thinking about a career change, career counseling could help you make sound decisions for your professional journey.
As a student you may need Career Counselling at the following stages: –
3rd grade to 7th grade: To understand your abilities, aptitude and your inherent likes or dislikes for various subjects. When you are good at a particular subject, the reasons could be a good teacher who is influencing your learning and you like to study that subject. Or it could be your aptitude for that subject.
A Psychometric assessment administered by the Career counsellor yields results that enable you to choose the subjects that you are good at and then pursue those subjects. This helps you to develop strong fundamental knowledge of the subject. At a later stage this could translate in to selection of the most suitable choice of subjects for further studies.
Many a times, students have a tendency of selecting a subject just because their friends and classmates are opting for that set of subjects. This may not be the right choice based on the student’s own needs and abilities.
